Working with Galleries

Part of CARFAC Ontario and ALAS’s Artist Legal Drop-In Sessions

Whether you’re preparing for your first exhibition or looking to strengthen existing professional relationships, navigating the world of galleries can be complex. This session offers valuable insights into working with galleries, covering essential topics like negotiating contracts and agreements, understanding different types of galleries, and effectively advocating for yourself as an artist.

This virtual session is intended to provide a relaxed space for artists interested in working with galleries to learn from each other and from our expert facilitators—Natalie Wood (visual and media artist, curator, educator, and social innovation specialist), Bryce Kanbara (artist, curator, and owner of You Me Gallery), and Vandana Taxali (art-tech entrepreneur and intellectual property lawyer). Designed as a community-led forum, participants are encouraged to bring and share their questions, experiences, struggles, and successes with their peers and facilitators.

Potential topics for discussion include:

• Negotiating contracts and agreements to ensure clear expectations and fair terms.

• Understanding copyright and intellectual property laws as they apply to exhibited work.

• Differentiating between gallery types (commercial, non-commercial, artist-run spaces) and how they operate.

• Budgeting for exhibition expenses and understanding commission structures.

• Strategies for advocating for your rights.

• Building collaborative relationships and partnerships with galleries.

Artists Legal Drop-In Series

“Artists Legal Drop-In Series” is an artist-led drop-in series that brings artists and lawyers together for meaningful exchanges and valuable knowledge-sharing so that artists are empowered to voice and act upon their rights. Artists attending can share and/or learn about legal / legal-adjacent issues and information while supporting each other in navigating their artistic practices. This series is a new, experimental model, designed to be flexible and responsive to artists’ needs.

Artist-Facilitator Bios

Natalie Wood is an award-winning Trinidadian-born, Tkaronto-based visual and media artist. Her multimedia artwork cohabits the areas of popular culture, education, and historical research, and explores her fascination with counter-narratives, Caribbean folk tales, healing cultures and icons that liberate Black and Queer communities. Her practice includes painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, video, and performance, and extends into her work as a curator, educator, and community-based queer activist. She is presently completing a research creation PhD focused on Black Queer Resistance in the performance of Blue Devil mas.

Wood is a founder of the Blue Devil Posse, Co-conspirator in the Blue Sea Devil Moko Jumbie Mas Camp, co-founder of the Environmental and Urban Change Black Caucus at York University, a fellow at Black Lives Matter’s Wildseed Centre for Art and Activism, and as a George Brown College (GBC) Professor she has been a Black Futures consultant and co-founder of the GBC Social Innovation Hub. She is represented by Paul Petro Contemporary.

Selected awards include a SSHRC Grant (2021), Canada Council Creation Grant 2020, several York University, Ontario Graduate Scholarships and Fellowships, a Black Leadership Award from the Black Student Success Network at GBC 2017, Community Based Research Award of Merit, from the Centre for Urban Health Initiatives & the Wellesley Institute 2007, the New Pioneers Award for contribution to Arts and Culture 2006, and the City of York Civic Recognition Award 1997 for using the Arts to support marginalized communities, a NourbeSe Philip Arts recognition grant along with numerous grants and awards from Toronto, Ontario.

Vandana Taxali is an art-tech entrepreneur and intellectual property lawyer practicing in the area of entertainment, art, music, film production, intellectual property, copyright, technology, blockchain and NFTs.

She is the founder of Artcryption, a platform to protect, manage and licence art, creative assets and IP. She is also an art arbitrator with the International Court of Art at the Hague.

Vandana serves on the Standard Council of Canada blockchain committee and the Art Identity Standard, NFT & Metaverse Working Group which is a consortium of art industry leaders developing a universal art ID standard.
