Join Our Board of Directors

This volunteer position will work in a collaborative environment contributing to a working board that offers oversight and direction with the CARFAC Ontario staff. Board members work together to oversee the strategic direction of the organization and to contribute to projects that support the organization. The Board is made up of artists. with one seat available for a member who is not a practicing artist, offering specialized skills/knowledge. Board members bring with them experience in a variety of areas including artist’s experiences, arts advocacy, fundraising, financial management, human resources, administration, and technical expertise.

The CARFAC Ontario Board currently consists of five members who meet regularly and have been recruited based on their skillset, experience, and connections within the artistic community. The Board drives CARFAC’s five-year Strategic Plan cycle, and is guided by the organization’s history. 

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Guidance and oversight to advance CARFAC Ontario’s mission and strategic plan

  • Monthly meetings remotely, and eventually--when and if possible based on board members' location--in the CARFAC Ontario office located at 401 Richmond Street West in Toronto (approx. 2-3 hours)

  • Quarterly review of financial statements

  • Collaborate with CARFAC Ontario staff on grant writing, special projects, and general improvement of operational workflows

  • Option to serve on one or more committees (Fundraising, HR, Governance, Publications)

  • Committee meetings 4 to 6 times a year (approx. 2-3 hours)

  • Hiring staff (as needed)

  • Contributing to CARFAC Ontario's Board of Directors development

Expertise / Areas of Interest: 

  • Governing artist-run centres and/or not-for-profit or charitable organizations

  • Arts Advocacy, Planning, Practice, and/or Programming

  • Equity, Diversity & Inclusion Governance and Planning

  • Fundraising, Development, and/or Grassroots organizing

  • Human Resources

  • Legal

  • Finance and Accounting

  • Communications and Public Relations

  • Government relations at either municipal, provincial, or federal level
