Creating & Showing in a Diverse Society
November 25th, 2015 @ 12PM-1:30PM
w/ charles c smith (University of Toronto, CPAMO)

With the increasing activities and excellence of Indigenous artists and artists of colour, there are so many ways in which the creative process brings in stories and artistic practices that have their roots in traditions outside of the Western aesthetic. This has created interest amongst artists of diverse backgrounds to explore what these art practices are and how they might enhance artistic practices.  This session will look at ways in which such learning takes place and how to honour these diverse artistic practices. We will explore the growth of diverse artistic practices in order to share knowledge amongst participants and discuss some artists who have successfully used diverse artistic practices, e.g., how they have done so, their process of learning and creating. If you’re interested in this topic and wish to learn more to enhance your current practice, join us for this special extended 1.5 hour session.

December 16th, 2015 @ 12PM-1PM
w/ Lisa Myers (Artist, Curator, Educator, OCAD) & Jaclyn Blumas (Artist, Heretical Objects Cooperative, Doomsquad)

It’s that age old question: "What are you going to do with your university degree?" For artists, this can be incredibly tougher to answer. How does a fine art graduate begin their career without the support of the institution they once had? What resources are available outside the institution to help young artists get their feet off the ground? These and similar questions like these will be addressed in this seminar dedicated to informing recent graduates about starting a career in fine art. Our speakers have ample experience as fine artists and will provide insight as to how to work your way into the dense Canadian art scene.
